Yes

No. However you should know something about ports and IPs etc.

There is really no best but BlackICE is easy to use and works well.

You can use both the hardware and software firewalls without any problems. The software firewall of course will be on your computer and the hardware will be device outside the computer. They will not conflict with each other at all. For the avg. person, I really do not see why you need a hardware firewall unless you have a router and a router acts as a firewall for you.
